Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of truecite.uk and the TrueCite service. They are meant to be read by the practitioner who uses the service.

Who we are

TrueCite (ABN 37 688 027 367), Sydney, Australia. You can reach us at info@truecite.uk. The service is provided from Australia by an Australian entity, and the data behind it is held in Singapore, so personal information is held outside the United Kingdom. Our Privacy Policy sets out how we handle it.

What the service does

TrueCite checks whether the identity of a case citation matches the record held for that judgment at Find Case Law, the National Archives database of court judgments. It returns one of three outcomes: VERIFIED_EXISTS, IDENTITY_CONFLICT, or UNRESOLVED.

Each United Kingdom citation you submit causes one lookup of that judgment at the National Archives, made at the moment you submit it. No local index of United Kingdom judgments is kept and no copy of a judgment is retained.

UNRESOLVED means only that nothing was checked: the source held no judgment at that citation, the source could not be reached, or the citation is not one this service resolves. It is never a finding that the judgment does not exist. Confirm the authority at its source.

The service does not check quoted wording, the proposition a citation is said to support, publication restrictions, or whether an authority remains good law. It is not legal advice. No artificial intelligence or large language model is used in the verification. What the service can actually check changes with what the National Archives holds, and is stated live at /api/v2/coverage; that endpoint is the authoritative statement of coverage. The practitioner remains responsible for every authority put before a court.

Accounts

Firms register with a firm name, a contact name and a firm email address. A sign-in code is sent by email; there is no password to keep. A session cookie named tc_session keeps you signed in. It is HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax, it is Secure when served over the internet, and it lasts up to 30 days.

The first ten reports issued to a firm are free. The free allowance belongs to the firm rather than to the person, so a trial is used once.

Price and payment

An identity report costs £2.90. It is a one-off charge; there is no subscription. Payment is made through Revolut's hosted checkout page. Card details are entered on that page and do not pass through TrueCite. We store the Revolut order number and the payment status, not the card.

If you have paid and the report has not been issued, write to info@truecite.uk and we will refund the payment. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Acceptable use

• Do not use automated bulk access, except through partner API credentials issued to you.
• Do not scrape, crawl or otherwise harvest the service, or make bulk requests to the National Archives through it.
• Do not use the service for any unlawful purpose.
• Do not put confidential information in a report label. A report URL can be read by anyone who holds the link.

Partner API (pilot)

Partner credentials are issued for a stated scope. Usage is metered. During a pilot, usage is not billed until a commercial rate has been agreed; separate written pilot terms may also apply. At most twenty United Kingdom citations are looked up live in one request, and this limit may not be worked around.

Intellectual property

The service belongs to TrueCite. Court records belong to the courts, and are used under the Open Justice - Licence v2.0; every United Kingdom finding carries the attribution that licence requires and a link to it. You may share reports issued to you.

Reports and their limits

A report URL is readable by anyone who holds it. A document fingerprint is a hash: it detects whether the stored payload has been altered. It says nothing about judicial authenticity and it is not court endorsement.

The service does not claim completeness beyond the coverage it declares at the time. A citation outside that coverage is answered as not checked, not as a finding about the judgment.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, our liability arising out of or in connection with the service is limited to re-supplying the service or to the amount you paid for the report concerned, being £2.90. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. When we do, we announce the change on this website and publish the new version here.

Termination

You may stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or end your access if these terms are breached.

Entire agreement and governing law

These terms, together with any written pilot terms that apply to you, are the entire agreement between us about the service. They are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
