Citation verification · England and Wales

True·Cite

For solicitors and counsel in England and Wales — and the systems they file from

Check the identity behind a citation. Keep the source evidence.

Each citation you submit is looked up once at Find Case Law, the National Archives database of court judgments, against the record held there for that one judgment. The finding carries the source, the time it was observed and the limits it was made under. No language model decides the result. Nothing you send can turn an unresolved citation into a verified one.

A finding should lead back to its source, its date and its limits.

LIVE LOOKUP · ONE REQUEST PER CITATION · Every finding names its source, the moment it was observed and the coverage version. Coverage is declared, never implied complete. Unresolved is not a finding that the judgment does not exist.

Live lookup · scope shown with every result

Three clear outcomes

Verified — The National Archives holds this judgment. The finding states the evidence basis, the judgment record and the time it was observed.

Identity conflict — The citation is held, but the case name you supplied plainly belongs to a different case. Both names are shown.

Unresolved — Nothing was checked, and no conclusion about the judgment is implied. The source held no judgment at that citation, the source could not be reached, or the citation is one this service does not resolve. Confirm the authority at its source.

Why this database

The Divisional Court has named the National Archives database of court judgments as an authoritative source. That is the database TrueCite checks against.

01 · one request per citation

Your citation goes to the register, and nowhere else.

Each United Kingdom citation you submit causes one lookup of that judgment at Find Case Law, The National Archives, made at the moment you submit it. Nothing is traversed, nothing is prefetched, and no list is walked. The Australian check, by contrast, is answered from indexes this service holds and makes no outbound request at all.

02 · identity only

The judgment text is never taken.

What comes back is the case name, the decision date, the judgment number and the address of the judgment. The text of the judgment is not downloaded, not stored and not retained. Nothing you send — a document, a link, a claim about the source — can change what the register said.

03 · no stored snapshot

Every finding says when it was observed.

There is no local index of United Kingdom judgments and no copy behind the answer, so nothing can go stale. The finding carries the observation time, the coverage version and the licence the record is used under, and it is reproducible from those.

How it sits in a firm

  1. In the browser, for a single citation or a short list.
  2. In a partner API, for the same check with scoped credentials and a metered pilot.
  3. At the document door inside Word or a practice system (being built).

Why this exists

The authority of the law rests on judges deciding by authorities that exist. A fabricated case in a court file misleads the court and disturbs the proper hearing of a matter. That cannot be allowed.

The practitioner who never meant it is still the one who answers for it: in costs, in reputation, sometimes in the right to practise. This exists so that the first does not happen, and the second need not.

And so that the profession can use these tools without fear, and keep pace.

Shield, and sword.

Use the same check for either side's submission. A citation the register does not hold is a reason to confirm the authority at its source, not a finding that the judgment does not exist.

A finding records the source, the observation time and the limits, so the practitioner can decide what further source checking is required.

review the findings first · retain a record of the check and its limits

How it verifies, and what it will never claim.

A statement of method, in the form a court would expect from an expert: what was done, from which source, and where the judgment was left to a person.

  1. Parse. The citation is read as a United Kingdom neutral citation. Reported series citations are answered as not checked, with the neutral form asked for instead.
  2. Look up.One request goes to Find Case Law, The National Archives, for that single judgment's record, at the moment of submission.
  3. Compare. The record's name is compared with the name you supplied, if you supplied one.
  4. Record. The finding keeps the source, the identification hash, the observation time and the coverage version.

Proof, not promise.

A citation the register does not hold never establishes fabrication. An unreadable citation, a source that could not be reached and a name that could not be compared cannot produce a verified finding.

What it leaves to you, in writing.

Whether an authority supports the proposition. Whether it is still good law. Whether a reported citation with no neutral form is the case you meant. Each is marked on the finding as left to the practitioner, never silently passed.

Not an archive.

TrueCite keeps no copy of any United Kingdom judgment. The register is the record, and the finding reports what it said when it was asked.

Priced so that no one has to think about it.
